Quadcopter Workshop

Overview: Design, build, and fly your own custom quadcopter from scratch by mastering aerial dynamics, propulsion hardware, flight electronics, and control systems. This intensive offline workshop at the Lecture Hall Complex, IIT Bombay Campus, bridges multirotor aerodynamics and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) piloting through interactive concept sessions, component assembly, and practical flight training. Note: Limited seats available. Complete hardware build kits provided; registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. What You Will Learn: Multirotor Aerodynamics & Frame Design: Fundamentals of multirotor thrust-to-weight ratios, propeller pitch selection, payload dynamics, and structural frame configuration (X-frame/Deadcat). Propulsion Systems & Power Electronics: Selection, wiring, and interfacing of Brushless DC (BLDC) motors, Electronic Speed Controllers (ESCs), and high-discharge LiPo battery management systems. Flight Controller & Avionics Interfacing: Mounting, orienting, and flashing microcontrollers/flight controllers (Betaflight/APM/KK Board) and integrating onboard IMUs (gyroscope and accelerometer) for attitude estimation. Radio Frequency & Telemetry Integration: Pairing 2.4 GHz RF transmitters and multi-channel receivers, mapping stick controls, and setting up failsafes for real-time UAV responsiveness. PID Tuning & Stabilization Flight Control: Understanding multirotor flight dynamics, closed-loop feedback, and tuning PID loops (Roll, Pitch, Yaw) for stable hovering and auto-leveling. System Integration, Calibration & Flight Testing: Assembling the physical frame, calibrating sensors and ESC ranges, troubleshooting thrust imbalances, and piloting the drone through live flight sessions.
